Bluetooth is ubiquitous and widely used in consumer electronics, especially in wireless headphones and speakers. While its convenience is undeniable, it can be restrictive for audiophiles seeking to get the most out of their listening experience. It's not uncommon to see people invest in a bluetooth amplifier as a way to bypass the limitations of Bluetooth and enjoy their favorite headphones or speakers in the most convenient way possible.

Many people assume that transmitting an audio signal over Bluetooth will degrade the sound quality, but this is not always true. If both the "source" device (such as a phone, tablet or computer) and the "sink" device (such as wireless headphones or speakers) support the same codec, the bluetooth receiver simply transmits the encoded signal to your speakers unaltered.

However, there is a significant amount of digital to analog conversion in a bluetooth transmitter and receiver. This is why bluetooth receivers and transmitters are often referred to as "lossy" devices. They take a lossy digital signal, compress it and then translate it into an analog signal that can be transmitted to your speakers.

The best bluetooth receivers for Hi-Fi stereo sound systems come with class D built-in power amps that provide high amplification performance for your speakers. The FiiO BTA30 is a great example of this. It's one of the most versatile Bluetooth receivers on the market and supports aptX, aptX HD and LDAC audio codecs. The transmitter also comes with RCA and optical inputs that can be connected to external DACs for improved music playback quality.

What Is a Professional Power Amplifier?

Power amplifiers take small voltage signals from preamplifier stages and turn them into large current signals to drive speaker voice coils. They also amplify PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) signals for use in DC motors and actuators. There are many different ways to design a power amplifier circuit, and the circuit configuration determines how the amp behaves. These differences are why the amplifier class designations exist - they give us a broad suggestion about an amp's performance characteristics.

One of the first amplification specifications you'll notice is the power rating. This spec tells you how much peak power the amplifier can deliver into a load for a very short time. It doesn't really say anything about how much average power the amp can deliver without overheating or other power supply issues. The peak power spec is often used to boast about an amp's ability, but it doesn't tell us how well the amp performs overall.

Professional amplifiers are typically designed to operate over a wide span of signal levels, from mics that have high output levels to large speakers with low input sensitivity. The extra headroom in a professional amplifier helps to ensure that only clean, undistorted power is delivered to the speakers.

Many professional speakers will opt to go with a separates-based approach, using a high-quality AV preamplifier along with a matching power amplifier to create their audio system. This allows them to select the best components for their specific needs, rather than accepting an all-in-one solution that may not have all of the features they require.
